Purpose, Vision and Values

Purpose

The purpose of this consult group is to connect like minded nutritionists and dietitians who work from either an eating disorder lens, a functional nutrition lens, or both. In this space, we can collaborate, case consult, be vulnerable about misconceptions within our field, and ask for mentorship and peer collaboration.

Vision

The vision of this consult group is to create a reliable and judgment free professional space for talking about some of the harder topics in our field. I.e., navigating conversations about weight loss, coordinating care with fatphobic medical providers, providing compassionate care, eating disorders with comorbidities such as PCOS and IBS, etc.

Values

  • Body Respect and Body Neutrality: Emphasize acceptance and respect for all body sizes and shapes.

  • Holistic Care: Prioritize overall well-being, including physical, mental, and emotional health, over weight or size.

  • Evidence-Based Practice: Discuss the latest scientific research while also holding space for anecdotal practice based evidence

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Acknowledge and respect diverse cultural perspectives that are shared in the consult group

  • Empowerment: Encourage consult group members to share their experiences so that we can learn and grow together

  • Non-Diet and Weight Inclusive Approach: Advocate for sustainable eating practices that do not focus on weight loss or restrictive dieting.

  • Functional Side of Things: we use functional nutrition tools without resorting to harmful extremes, such as elimination diets without guided reintroduction, overuse of supplements, complicated nutrition protocols or unnecessary functional testing

  • Affirming and Validating the Lived Experience of Our Clients: We recognize the desires and goals of our clients, and do not have our own agenda. This is especially important for clients who have experienced medical trauma or bias because of the size of their body. I.e., having a compassionate and informed conversation with a client about their decision to use ozempic, vs condemning it.

  • Compassionate Communication: willingness to be open and receptive to professional opinions or experiences that differ from your own

  • Accessibility: create a group dynamic where all information shared is accessible to all who attend

  • Collaboration: Work alongside other health professionals to provide comprehensive and coordinated care.

Community Guidelines

This consult group is for HAES Aligned Functional Nutrition and Eating Disorder nutritionists and dietitians who practice from, or are interested in practicing from, a health at every size perspective and who provide weight inclusive care. Please read the following to make sure you align with consult group intentions:

The intention of this consult group is to connect like minded nutritionists and dietitians who work from either an eating disorder lens, a functional nutrition lens, or both. Together, we build a professional community, case consult, collaborate, learn from each other, share knowledge, share referrals, share what we are doing as providers, coordinate meetups and more. The intention is not to market or share information. Do not bring your affiliate programs to this consult group.

If discussions are brought up that do not align with fat positive and weight inclusive nutrition care, this will be discussed as a group, in order to support continued learning and to ensure all members of the consult group are moving towards health at every size and weight inclusive care.

In this space, we are vulnerable as we share our experience with implicit bias, areas of needed growth and misconceptions within our field. We ask that members are open to feedback and new perspectives in order to address harm, build trust, and learn from missteps or mistakes. Together, we want to provide a safe, supportive environment for learning and unlearning. It is important in this consult group that members do not fear bringing up new topics or perspectives, as they work on expanding the connection and conversation between functional nutrition and HAES.

We invite you to join the HAES Aligned Functional Nutrition and Eating Disorder Consult Group if you are aligned with the information outlined above. We reserve the right to remove anyone from the consult group if they are not in alignment with the values and community guidelines detailed above.
