Functional nutrition

A Root Cause Approach

Functional Nutrition is a root cause approach to understanding how your body systems work together. It is highly personalized and evidence based. Functional nutrition considers more than your genetics and the food you eat, but also looks at factors like past trauma, mental health, and living environment. At Nutrition Studio, we pride ourselves on providing this model of care through a weight inclusive lens, considering relationship to food and body and ensuring nutrition interventions are from a food abundance and not a food restriction lens. Kassy Dobson, RDN is our functional nutrition expert and has advanced training and certification as a Functional Health Practitioner-certified.

Functional Nutrition Testing

Functional Nutrition testing is an integrative approach to identifying root cause of symptoms, in order to provide highly individualized nutrition guidance. Functional nutrition testing helps your dietitian to identify deficiencies, gut dysbiosis, and more.

Mind Body Connection

The mind body connection, or gut-brain axis, is an integral part of how our body functions, responds to stress, and regulates mood and digestion. Our thoughts have a powerful impact on digestion and absorption of nutrients. In our work together, we focus on mindfulness practices, anti-inflammatory eating patterns and microbiome health. Together, these aspects of functional nutrition  benefit the two way gut-brain connection.

Whole Foods Nutrition

Functional nutrition is guided by the foundations of a therapeutic diet. We focus on adding in foods that reduce inflammation, promote hormone balance, establish healthy gut bacteria, improve mitochondrial health, minimize stress and support cognitive health and brain function.

Lifestyle Modifications

Our lifestyle and the cultures we identify with, deeply impact overall health. This includes environmental factors, how much money you make, where you live, who you spend your time with, how you move your body, spirituality, and so much more. Functional nutrition considers each of these parts of your identity, creating a plan that makes sense and is in alignment with your values.

Stress and Sleep

A lot of people don't realize it, but high stress and poor sleep can be more detrimental to your health than the food you eat. Because of this, functional nutrition focuses on improving sleep hygiene, implementing long term stress reduction and providing guidance on supplements and therapeutic foods that counteract fatigue, anxiety, and build resiliency.

Our Promise is To Provide Ethical Functional Nutrition Guidance

  • Explain the pros and cons of pursuing functional testing, and only recommend functional testing when other conventional testing hasn't provided the answers you seek

  • Only recommend supplements when appropriate for your budget and lifestyle

  • We do sometimes recommend individualized elimination trials of highly allergenic foods, as well as functional testing for food sensitivities. However, we also practice a food first, and "all foods fit" approach, with the focus on adding in therapeutic foods to modulate inflammation and help heal the intestinal barrier.
